1979 27th October Saint Vincent became an independent state within the Commonwealth and adopted a new flag; a vertical tricolour with additional stripes; Blue / narrow White / Yellow / narrow White / Green. The 1912 Coat of Arms was displayed on a green breadfruit leaf on the yellow band.
They are a reference to both the letter "V", which is the first letter of the country's name and its nickname as the "Gems of the Antilles" and "Jewels of the Caribbean". Accordingly, the flag itself has been given the moniker of "The Gems".
